Connecting Seniors, Using Technology
The Albion Health Care Alliance has teamed up with Albion College Americorps students, Carewell Services, and Senior Health Partners, to have college students teach local seniors how to use technology to connect to the world around them. Social connections lead to other benefits. According to the National Institute on Aging, “If you are in poor health, you may be more likely to be socially isolated or lonely. If you are socially isolated or feeling lonely, it can put your physical and mental health at risk. Adults who are lonely or socially isolated are less healthy, have longer hospital stays, are readmitted to the hospital more often, and are more likely to die earlier than those with meaningful and supportive social connections.” It is estimated that 40% of older adults experience feelings of loneliness. (Aging and Technology: A Review of the Research Literature, Paul Fredollino and Erin E. Mullen, 2009). So AHCA and its partners brainstormed how to decrease this loneliness. The Tech Savvy Seniors program was born, thanks to funding from the Calhoun County Senior Millage. As of February 2024, Albion College students have just begun working with area seniors. If you know of a senior who could benefit from this program, email Alfredia@Albionhca.org or call (517) 629-5080.
